Biography
Jonathan grew up with an outgoing, adventurous personality and apparently never met a stranger he couldn’t have a conversation with. Whether it was a friend, a stranger, or pretty much anyone within earshot, Jonathan loved talking—and he wasn’t exactly known for being quiet. His siblings, naturally, found his enthusiasm for conversation slightly less charming than everyone else did. That outgoing nature and sense of adventure have stayed with him throughout his life and have helped shape his love of meeting people, experiencing new things, and seeing the world.
Outside the dojo, one of Jonathan’s biggest passions is travel. He has visited 16 states and 6 countries, always looking for new places, experiences, and opportunities to learn something different. One of his favorite travel memories came from his first trip to Japan, where he discovered tonkotsu ramen. Rather than simply enjoying it and moving on, Jonathan did what Jonathan apparently does—he learned how to make it himself. So if you’re ever lucky enough to find yourself talking food with him, don’t be surprised if the conversation turns into a discussion about ramen.
Jonathan also tries to keep a simple philosophy in mind: “It’s not a race. You are here. Enjoy it and make the most of it.” For him, life isn’t just about rushing toward the next goal. It’s about taking the time to appreciate where you are, the people you’re with, and the experiences along the way.
Of course, no Jonathan biography would be complete without mentioning the rose bush. During high school, Jonathan somehow managed to fall into one, resulting in cuts to his legs and a lifelong dislike of roses. Some people leave high school with fond memories, friendships, and yearbooks. Jonathan left with scars and a personal grudge against an entire species of flower.
Jonathan brings that same sense of curiosity, enthusiasm, and humor into his time at the dojo. Whether he’s sharing something he’s learned, talking about his latest adventure, or simply enjoying a conversation with students and friends, he believes there’s always something to experience, someone to learn from, and a reason to enjoy the journey.
