Discover the Benefits of Martial Arts
At American Pangainoon Academy, we’re more than just a dojo – we’re a community that embraces individuals and families alike, helping them grow through the principles and practice of martial arts.
01
Adult Karate (Pangainoon Karate Jutsu Hino Ryu)
Pangainoon, a traditional Okinawan Martial Art brought from China by Master Kanbun Uechi, means "half hard, half soft". This art focuses on body conditioning and strength, emphasizing the balance between hard and soft techniques to develop a well-rounded martial artist.
Youth Karate (Pangainoon Karate Jutsu Hino Ryu)
Our Youth Karate class provides a specialized practice of Pangainoon, concentrating more on control and less on body conditioning compared to the adult class. The curriculum includes katas/forms derived from Okinawan karate-do, tailored for the youth's development.
02
Wee Dragons
Wee Dragons is a starter class designed for young children beginning their journey in martial arts. The class focuses on following instructions and body control, nurturing the essential cognitive skills needed to progress into the Youth Karate class.
03
04
Aiki Jujutsu
Aiki Jujutsu is a fluid Japanese martial art that harmonizes with an opponent's movements, redirecting their energy through throws and joint locks. "Aiki" describes the concept of blending with the opponent during combat to achieve oneness and control.
Therapeutic Tai Chi and Qi Gong
Our Tai Chi and Qi Gong classes offer a gentle introduction to Chinese martial arts, featuring slow, intentional movements paired with controlled breathing. These classes focus on quieting the mind, improving balance, and building core strength, flexibility, and aerobic conditioning.
05
Youth MMA
Youth MMA combines elements from various martial arts, including striking, throws, and grappling, to teach practical self-defense skills. This class also instills discipline and boosts confidence while preparing students for competition at all levels.

About Us
The American Pangainoon Academy has been a part of the community of New Carlisle for over 15 years. Under the instruction of Rich Upton, the school originally opened in 2007 as a branch of Davis School of Martial Arts. In 2012, the name was changed to American Pangainoon Academy and maintained its association with the International Pangainoon Budo Kai Hino Ryu led by Soke Carl J. Davis. Prior to the passing of Master Davis in 2021, the leadership of the association was entrusted to Master Upton.
